The blooming season at Yahata Azalea Park, nestled 1,100 meters above sea level, typically begins in mid-May and extends to mid-June. The park showcases a variety of azalea species, each contributing to a stunning array of colors. To experience the full splendor of the azalea blooms, visitors are advised to plan their trip during the peak blooming season. However, the Nasu Highlands offer breathtaking vistas and serene hiking trails year-round, making it a captivating destination for all seasons.
Taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nasushiobara Station (which takes approximately 70 minutes) is a convenient option for travelers seeking access to Nasu Highland. For those holding a JR Pass, the fare to Nasushiobara is covered. Upon arrival at Nasushiobara Station, travelers can seamlessly transition to a bus bound for Nasu Yumoto. The bus journey to this charming hot spring town nearby typically lasts around 50 minutes. From Nasu Yumoto, visitors can either continue on the bus directly to Azalea Park without disembarking or opt to spend an hour exploring the town before catching the next bus to Azalea Park.
There are three bus stops on the hillside providing access to Azalea Park. However, it's advisable to disembark at the Tsutsuji Tsurihaashi bus stop on the lower or south side of the park and ascend towards Yahata Onsen on the higher or north side. The Tsutsuji Tsurihashi, a suspension bridge spanning 130 meters long and towering 38 meters above the river below, is located just a stone's throw away from the bus stop. After crossing the canyon and proceeding along the boardwalk, you’ll encounter a crossroad leading to the South Azalea colony. The park's south and north colonies can be explored within one hour by traversing its pathways. Take your time to enjoy the park at your own pace; however, remember that generally, the bus operates hourly, so plan your visit accordingly.
Yahata Azalea Park, spanning 60 acres and home to over 200,000 azalea plants, presents a botanical paradise. As visitors traverse its winding paths, they're enveloped in a sensory journey of vibrant colors and scents, from soft pastels to bold crimsons, all set against the majestic Nasu Mountains backdrop, offering a serene escape from everyday hustle. Rooted in its intriguing past as once grazing lands for horses and cattle, the park's azaleas flourished undisturbed amidst lush greenery, protected by natural toxins. Today, Yahata Azalea Park is a testament to nature's resilience, captivating visitors with its untouched beauty and rich history.
If you spend an hour at Azalea Park, you'll have ample time to savor the breathtaking vistas of Nasu Highland. Sesshoseki, also known as the 'Killing Stone,' is a legendary rock formation significant in Japanese folklore, believed to have split in two after being struck by the hero's sword, Yamato Takeru. From there, take a stroll and marvel at the Sentai Jizou underneath, a collection of Jizou statues symbolizing protection and guidance.
